STEREO 3D & 5.1 SOUND
Join us on a three-dimensional summer journey to the alleys of Heidelberg's old town. In the largest pedestrian zone of Germany, we walk over the Alte Brücke (Old Bridge) to the Marktplatz (Market Place), accompanied by the inspiring music of Bjorn Lynne.
Dongleware created this movie to develop fundamentals for 3D-HD movie production. This includes automation using scripts (in Adobe After Effects) as well as techniques for stereoscopic image stabilization in post-production. The opening sequence was animated in Cinema4D. The stereo soundtracks of left and right camera were recorded using appropriately aligned microphones and mixed to 5.1 channel surround sound.

Let's get through the "but" first: As a travelogue, this is pretty dull stuff indeed. 3-D is not meant for shots of interesting things in the distance, since there's little, if any, 3-D content in distant objects. Thus, to show off 3-D, the videographer(s) have place nearby tourists in view, or have concentrated on nearby walls, with the objects of interest mostly in the distance. One can be aware of the 3-D, but it adds very little to the subjects at hand.
On the positive side, this does demonstrate to me that 3-D sources can be successfully transformed into anaglyptic images which provide good (but not always perfect) separation of the two images. In particular, the red-cyan encoding provides excellent separation while still providing some semblance of color to the images. I'm sure that if I had the expensive synchronizing glasses the images would be superb -- that is, if it weren't for the dull material!
