Battle of Long Tan 60 Minutes
This is a story which 60 Minutes Australia did on the Battle of Long Tan on 13 August 2006 in time for the 40th Anniversary of the battle which was 18 August 2006. We arranged for two of the Australian commanders who fought the battle to go back to Vietnam for the first time in 40 years and meet two of their former enemy. For three and a half hours in a lightning monsoon storm, 105 young Australians and 3 New Zealanders fought and defeated more than 2,500 enemy Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army in a rubber plantation called Long Tan. 18 Australians were killed and 21 wounded and some 500-800 VC and NVA were killed and more than 1,000 wounded. Almost 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam and it was Australia's longest war - 10 years. We have made an award winning documentary and are in the process of making a movie on the story.
