Aysecik ve sihirli cüceler rüyalar ülkesinde (1971) (Turkish Wizard of Oz)
This 1971 endeavor offers cinematic insanity which boggles the mind. This is a buried treasure which comes to light and deserves to be hailed as a new cult classic. The introduction of the Scarecrow marks the point where the movie takes a "twist". Why the Turks chose to make Scarecrow gay will forever remain another Turkish film enigma. The scarecrow is so stereotypically homosexual that Dorothy actually sews his rear up. Dorothy melts the witch with a bucket of water and makes friends with her soldiers. This no-budget Turkish-language remake of the 1939 MGM classic is a wholly unexpected and truly astonishing series of situations and sequences. The Tin Woodsman is found rusting and moaning in a strangely sexual manner and the Cowardly Lion has relatively little to do here but twitch his nose. A village of overgrown dolls and a tribe of dancing cavemen are also featured here and the carnage brings a Warner Brothers-morphed into-John Waters sense of nuttiness to the story which cannot be underappreciated. The lack of subtitles (which actually makes the film that much more fun) will have you wondering for the rest of your life exactly what it was that the Scarecrow was saying when Dorothy was sewing his butt together.
