Shot Grable
Operation Upshot Knothole, Shot Grable - May 25, 1953. Yield: 15 Kilotons. Location: Frenchman Flat (Nevada Test Site). Shot Grable was another name for the test for the Atomic Cannon. The Atomic Cannon, at 280 mm, was the largest nuclear capable mobile artillery piece manufactured by the United States. On May 25, 1953, a 280 mm cannon fired an atomic projectile a distance of 7 miles at the Nevada Test Site. Twenty 280 mm cannons were manufactured. None were used in battle. This was the same type of bomb as the one that leveled Hiroshima. This particular footage was originally shot in Cinemascope. Sound effects added. For information about the photography of this test, see "Atomic Filmmakers: Hollywood's Secret Studio."
