Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia with a population of an estimated 3.74 million people. This major centre of commerce, industry and cultural activity is often referred to as Australia's sporting and cultural capital and is home to many nation's most significant cultural and sporting events and institutions. Melbourne use to be the capital of Australia from its federation in 1901 until Federal Parliament moved to the newly purpose capital, Canberra in 1927. This city is home to Australia's first stock exchange, held the Olympic Games in 1956 and has major companies like BHP working within this great city.
