When you hear the name Roger Federer, you think of the 7-time Grand Slam tennis champion, the Number 1 tennis player in the world. You would think he only has time for tennis, but I got to meet him for a different reason: because he wants to help the world's sick and poor children. In 2003, he established the Roger Federer Foundation to help disadvantaged children and to promote sports for young people in South Africa, where his mother was raised. On Monday, April 3, 2006, at the age of 24, Roger Federer was declared a UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) Goodwill Ambassador, a position awarded to celebrities who have already demonstrated the urge to help children worldwide. This program began in 1954 with Danny Kaye as the first ambassador. Roger Federer will now be a role model not only for his tennis playing, but also for his role in helping needy kids worldwide.
