Gulliver's Travels
Famed for his classic cartoons featuring Koko the Clown, Betty Boop, Popeye the Sailor, and Superman, legendary animator Max Fleischer produced this 1939 Technicolor version of Jonathan Swift's masterpiece. In 1699, Lemuel Gulliver (Sam Parker) is swept off his ship by a storm in the south sea, and found washed up on the island of Lilliput by Gabby (Pinto Colvig, who also voiced Goofy for Fleischer's rival, Walt Disney). Soon Gulliver must step in--literally--when war breaks out between King Little (Jack Mercer, the voice of Popeye) and his equally tiny neighbor, King Bombo of Blefuscu, despite their children's engagement. Directed by Max's brother Dave, this received OSCAR nominations for Best Song (Ralph Rainger and Leo Robin's "Faithful Forever") and Original Score (Victor Young, a winner for Around the World in Eighty Days).
