Michel Corette was well known at the turn of the 18th century, as a composer and player, and as a pedagog. His books to learn how to play the violin and other various instruments are still much in use today by the ones wanting to learn how one played in those days.
That suite, comes in fact from his violin method, the first part been dedicated on how to play the French music, and the second on how to play the Italian music. And one can see by the quality of that piece (after all, just for teaching !) what is the quality of his compositions.
Typical French suite (that other file: suite by Montéclair, also on Vuze, and from the same concert, was rather close to it).
Ouverture
Sarabande (which is rather faster then one is use to say today)
Menuet 1 an 2 (the first one is repeated after 2) again, the menuet is definitely faster then one is use to believe today: it was supposed to be a fast and light dance, and it had one step per bar ! and more, they gave the proper length of pendulum that gives the right speed: around MM 160 per beat !)
Chaconne, not a fast dance, but a bit heavy and faster anyway than one plays it generally, based on a repeated formula of 8 bars, with variations.
